Boat ramp guide
Redondo Beach Boat Hoist & Hand Launch
Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County, CA
Overview
This is not a trailer boat ramp. King Harbor in Redondo Beach has no ramp. Its launch options are a staffed five-ton boat hoist at Redondo Beach Marina and a seasonal hand launch for hand-carried craft. Dockya lists it as a ramp because it is the closest category for a public launch.
The boat hoist
The hoist at Redondo Beach Marina lifts boats up to 10,000 pounds and 30 feet in length. It is operated by marina staff, so you can't self-launch, and it is priced by boat length for a round trip (launch and retrieval). Marina-posted rates run from $8 for a hand launch up to $40 for boats 25 ft and over; check current rates with the marina. The hoist runs on summer and winter hours, with longer weekend days, and operates every day of the year except Christmas.
Hand launch
Hand-carried boats such as kayaks, paddleboards and small dinghies can launch from the city hand launch at 239 N. Harbor Drive. It is free and open to the public from April through October. Redondo Beach Marina also lists a hand launch at its hoist for a fee.
Is a ramp coming?
The City of Redondo Beach approved a contract in August 2024 for design work, studies and permitting coordination on a public boat launch at Mole D. The contract runs through December 31, 2026. Construction hasn't been confirmed by the sources we reviewed, so plan around the hoist for now.
Before you go
Call Redondo Beach Marina at (310) 374-3481 to confirm hours and fees before trailering a boat. Trailer boats over 30 ft or 10,000 lb exceed the hoist limits and need a launch elsewhere.
Getting there & access
By road
The hoist is at Redondo Beach Marina, 181 N. Harbor Drive, in King Harbor. Call (310) 374-3481 before you arrive to confirm hours.
How the hoist works
Marina staff lift boats between your trailer and the water. It is a staffed service, priced by boat length for a round trip, so you pay for both launching and retrieving.
Size limits
Boats up to 10,000 lb and 30 ft only. Larger trailer boats should use a launch ramp at another harbor.
Hand launch
The city hand launch at 239 N. Harbor Dr is for hand-carried craft, free from April through October.
After launching
Check in with Port Police on VHF 16 if visiting, and see the King Harbor guide for guest moorings and anchoring.
