Privacy policy

Dockya is a guide to California boating places and, soon, a way to find marine service providers. This page explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have. We keep it short and in plain language.
What we collect
- Account details. If you sign up, we store your name, email address and account type (boat owner or service provider). If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile photo with us. We never see your Google password.
- What you post. Reviews, photos, replies, reports and "Suggest an update" notes you send are stored with your account. Reviews and approved photos are public. Review photos stay private until our team approves them.
- Saved places. When you are signed in, saved places are stored with your account. When you are not signed in, we create a random ID in your browser so the heart button works, and we only count saves in total.
- Provider details. Business listings may start from public sources such as business websites and official registries. When a provider claims a listing, we also store the contact details and documents they give us to verify the business, including a phone number checked with a text message code.
- Searches. We log what is typed into the site search to improve results. These logs have no account ID, IP address or cookie attached.
- Usage data. We use Google Analytics to understand which pages people visit, through cookies set by Google. We do not send your name, email or account ID to Google Analytics, and it only runs on dockya.com.
What we don't collect
- Your location. "Near me" features use your device's location only inside your browser, to sort places by distance. We never store it.
- Weather lookups. Weather comes straight from the National Weather Service (weather.gov), which receives the location of the place you are viewing, not yours.
How we use information
- To run your account and show what you post.
- To verify providers and keep fake listings and reviews off the site.
- To answer you when you contact us.
- To keep the site secure and to understand, in total, how it is used so we can improve it.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.
Who else handles it
We use a small number of service providers that process data for us:
- Supabase: database, sign-in and file storage.
- Google: Google sign-in, Google Analytics, and web fonts.
- Hosting and email delivery partners that run the site and send account emails.
- Map tiles from OpenFreeMap. Your browser loads them directly, as on any map site.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect people's safety.
Cookies and browser storage
Signing in keeps a session in your browser's storage. Google Analytics sets its own cookies, which you can block in your browser settings or with Google's opt-out add-on. Blocking them does not break the site.
Your choices and rights
- You can edit or delete your own reviews, including their photos, at any time.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete your account by emailing hello@dockya.com.
- California residents have rights under the CCPA, including the right to know, correct and delete personal information, and not to be treated differently for using them. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context advertising.
How long we keep it
We keep account data while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep it. Public reviews may stay up without your name.
Children
Dockya is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If the change is significant, we will also tell signed-in users.
