Harbor guide
King Harbor, Redondo Beach
Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County, CA
Overview
King Harbor is the small-craft harbor at Redondo Beach, in Redondo Beach, California. Four marinas hold about 1,400 slips of various sizes: King Harbor Marina, Portofino Marina, Port Royal Marina and the public Redondo Beach Marina.
Layout and who uses it
The harbor is organized around its marinas and a string of waterfront moles. Redondo Beach Marina is the public marina and the place to ask about visitor space. The other three marinas are privately owned and do not offer guest slips. The harbor also has three yacht clubs listed by the state boating agency (Redondo Beach Yacht Club, King Harbor Yacht Club and the Portofino Hotel and Yacht Club), an aquatic center for youth programs, and a rental operation at Rocky Point Marina. Most of the boats here are owner-kept power and sail boats, plus kayaks, paddleboards and rental craft.
Launching is different here
King Harbor has no trailer boat ramp. The only launch for trailer boats is a five-ton boat hoist at Redondo Beach Marina, operated by staff and limited to boats up to 10,000 lb and 30 ft. Hand-carried craft can launch at a separate city hand launch on North Harbor Drive, which is free from April through October. The city has contracted design work for a public boat launch on Mole D, but no ramp exists yet. See our Redondo Beach Boat Hoist & Hand Launch page for details.
Visiting by boat
Redondo Beach Marina does not rent guest slips but does offer temporary guest moorings. There is also a free anchorage northwest of the main channel, where boaters report a three-night limit. Contact the harbor's Port Police on VHF 16 on arrival, and set both a bow and a stern anchor to keep your boat from swinging into the traffic lane. The Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol is at the west end of Marina Way next to Moonstone Park.
Good to know
King Harbor Marine Center, at 831 North Harbor Drive, is a full-service haul-out yard with a travel lift, and it is where most bottom work and repairs get done.
Getting there & access
By water
Contact the Port Police on VHF 16 when you arrive. Only Redondo Beach Marina takes visitors, through temporary guest moorings; call (310) 374-3481 ahead. The other marinas are private and have no guest slips.
Anchoring
A free anchorage lies northwest of the main channel. Boaters report a three-night limit. Use both a bow and a stern anchor so the boat doesn't swing into the channel traffic path.
Trailer boats and hoist
There is no trailer ramp. Boats up to 30 ft and 10,000 lb can be lifted in and out by the 5-ton hoist at Redondo Beach Marina, which is staffed, seasonal in hours and priced by boat length. Call (310) 374-3481 to confirm hours.
Hand-launched craft
The city hand launch at 239 N. Harbor Drive is free to the public from April through October. Redondo Beach Marina also lists a paid hand launch at its hoist.
Harbor Patrol and by land
Harbor Patrol is at the west end of Marina Way, adjacent to Moonstone Park, (310) 318-0632, for water-safety and boating questions in King Harbor. The harbor is reached along North Harbor Drive and Marina Way beside the Redondo Beach Pier.
