Del Rey Yacht Club

Marina del Rey, Los Angeles County, CA

Overview

Del Rey Yacht Club (DRYC) is a private yacht club on Palawan Way in Marina del Rey. Five organizers founded it on April 8, 1952, more than a decade before the harbor was dedicated. It's known for its offshore racing and for the Del Rey to Puerto Vallarta International Yacht Race.

History

The club signed a 60-year lease on its Del Rey Marina parcel in 1962 and finished its first clubhouse in September 1965, the same year the harbor opened. It grew steadily, adding 88 slips in 1972 and 56 more on the Main Channel in 1984. A full renovation was completed in 1994, and a lease signed in 1999 runs through 2047. In 1972 the club also dedicated a facility at Catalina Harbor for members and guests.

Racing

DRYC organized the first international race from Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta in 1971. It's still a biennial event that draws an international fleet. The club runs more than 25 races a year, including the William Berger & William Stein Series, the Halloween Race and the Drumstick Race, and members compete in events such as the Transpacific Yacht Race.

Facilities

The state boating database lists 330 covered slips and tie-ups and 100 dry-storage spaces. Facilities include a boat washdown area, dock power, gear lockers, haul-out and boat repair, a sewage and bilge pump-out, plus dining, restrooms, showers and ice.
