Boat ramp guide
Newport Dunes Launch Ramp
Newport Beach, Orange County, CA
Overview
The Newport Dunes launch ramp is the public trailer-boat launch for Newport Harbor. It sits at 1131 Back Bay Drive on the Upper Bay side of the harbor, at the north end of the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina, next to the Back Bay Bistro. The resort operates the ramp, and the California Division of Boating and Waterways lists it as public access.
Why boaters use it
It's the main place to put a trailer boat into Newport Harbor. From the ramp you run down the harbor at the harbor's 5 mph no-wake limit. The Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol estimates about 40 minutes to the breakwater, so allow time on busy days. Many owners launch here for a day on the harbor or a trip out the entrance.
What's on site
The resort has a wash rack next to the ramp, a designated boat parking area, marina slips and boat trailer storage. DBW also lists a sewage and bilge pump-out and restrooms here. The marina office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Fees and conditions
The marina lists $15 to launch in winter and $20 in summer (the Friday of Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend), and $35 on July 4. Rates change, so call (949) 729-1100 before you go. The upper reaches of the bay are extremely shoal, so watch the tide until you're in the main channel, and don't run motorized boats in the lagoon section of the Back Bay.
