Woodley Island Marina

Eureka, Humboldt County, CA

Overview

Woodley Island Marina is the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District's marina, on Woodley Island across the channel from downtown Eureka. Its 237 slips hold commercial fishing boats, recreational boats, research vessels and safety vessels, and it can take boats up to about 114 feet.

Visiting by boat

Slip D-23 is the guest dock, with a two-hour courtesy tie-up. Call on VHF 14 or (707) 443-0801 before docking. Most boats over 75 feet can be fit in, but call at least a week ahead. Transient berths have power and water.

On the island

There's a café and bar, laundry and showers, the Ship Shop chandlery, a fish cleaning station and kayak rentals with a launching area. Working boats can use 2-ton and 1-ton hoists plus a work dock and island work area. Pump-out and used-oil disposal are on site. Fuel, groceries and restaurants are across the channel in downtown Eureka.

Getting out to sea

Ocean trips cross the Humboldt Bay bar, a Coast Guard Regulated Navigation Area that can be restricted or closed, with notices on VHF 16 and 22A. Get a bar report at (707) 443-2212 or on VHF 22A. The bar is always worse on an outgoing tide.

Common boat service needs here

Hull cleaning

Boats berthed year-round in the bay's salt water grow fouling on hulls and running gear. Regular diver cleaning keeps them efficient.

Engine and mechanical work

With hoists and a work yard on the island, fishing and recreational boats here keep up engine service so they can trust it on the bar.

Canvas and covers

Wet North Coast winters are hard on canvas, covers and cushions on boats left in the slip. Good covers and repairs keep water out.

Electronics

VHF radios for check-in and bar reports, plus navigation electronics for foggy coastal runs, are routine service items.
