Harbor Island Marinas

San Diego, San Diego County, CA

Overview

Harbor Island is a man-made peninsula on the north side of San Diego Bay, just off Harbor Drive and less than a mile from San Diego International Airport. Harbor Island Drive loops around it, and several marinas line the shore, which makes it one of the easiest places in the city to keep a boat close to downtown, Point Loma and the open ocean.

The marinas

The Port of San Diego lists four marinas on Harbor Island Drive proper: Harbor Island West Marina (2040 Harbor Island Dr.), Marina Cortez (1880), Safe Harbor Sunroad (955) and Sheraton Marina (1380). Safe Harbor Cabrillo Isle, at 1450 Harbor Island Dr., sits on the same loop. Harbor Island West is the largest, with 620 slips from 21 to 100 feet, a full-service fuel dock, a sail repair loft and a sailing academy. Safe Harbor Sunroad advertises wet slips from 20 to 110 feet and separate transient slips from 30 to 110 feet, with room for a 20-foot beam and a 14-foot draft.

Fuel and pump-outs

Harbor Island West Marina has the island's fuel dock and a free public pump-out station, which the Port lists as open 24 hours. The Port's listing gives fuel dock hours of 7 a.m. to 5 or 7 p.m. depending on the season, so call ahead on a late arrival.

Visiting boats

The marina websites do not publish a transient slip count, except for Sunroad's transient category, so call the marina office before you arrive. The Port's own guest docks are not on Harbor Island. They are across the water at the southwestern end of Shelter Island, with 26 slips for vessels up to 65 feet. Boaters who would rather anchor can ask about the Port's cruiser anchorage (A9) at the east tip of Harbor Island, which is limited to boats not registered in San Diego County and requires an in-person permit and a Harbor Police inspection.

What boating here is like

Harbor Island is on the route of the annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. All of San Diego Bay is a no-discharge zone, so holding tanks and pump-outs are part of everyday boating here.

Getting there & access

Entering from sea

Harbor Island sits inside San Diego Bay, so you enter through the main bay entrance off Point Loma and run east along the northern shore. Check a current chart for channel depths and for the Navy and commercial traffic in the bay before you go.

Guest slips and visiting boats

Safe Harbor Sunroad lists transient slips for boats from 30 to 110 feet. Other marinas on the island accept visitors by arrangement, so call the office first: Harbor Island West (619) 291-6440, Marina Cortez (619) 291-5985, Sheraton Marina (619) 692-2249, Safe Harbor Sunroad (619) 574-0736. Reserve in advance in peak summer and holiday periods.

Cruiser anchorage (A9)

The A9 anchorage at the east tip of Harbor Island is for visiting boats not registered in San Diego County. A permit is issued in person at the Harbor Police substation, 1401 Shelter Island Dr., with proof of non-residency, and Harbor Police inspect the vessel. Holding tanks are required. Time limits are set by the Port, so confirm the current limit when you apply.

Port guest docks nearby

The Port's reservable guest docks are at 1401 Shelter Island Dr. (26 slips, up to 65 ft, water and 30-amp power, stays up to 15 days in a 40-day period). Check availability online, then call (619) 686-6227 between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Email a valid ID and vessel registration to moorings@portofsandiego.org.

Harbor Island Drive loops off Harbor Drive near the airport. Harbor Island West advertises free guest parking with seven-day security. Liberty Station and Point Loma Village are a bike ride away.

Common boat service needs here

Hull cleaning

Boats kept in slips in warm bay water pick up marine growth quickly, so owners here commonly schedule regular diver hull cleaning.

Bottom paint and haul-outs

Haul-outs for antifouling and running-gear work usually go to the Shelter Island and Chula Vista yards listed by the Port, a short run from Harbor Island.

Detailing and washdowns

Salt, sun and the dust of a working harbor mean regular wash-and-wax service for slip boats, particularly boats that charter or race.

Rigging and engine service

Many sailboat and powerboat owners rely on mobile mechanics to service engines, impellers and cooling systems at the slip.
