About this lake

Twin Lakes sit in the Mammoth Lakes Basin above the town of Mammoth Lakes, at about 8,600 feet in the Inyo National Forest, with Mammoth Mountain above and a waterfall running into one of the lakes.

On the water

The two lakes cover about 108 acres and are calm enough for canoes and kayaks. Power boats must use electric motors. Boats can be rented at the general store, a short walk from the campsites. Trout fishing (rainbow, brook and brown) is popular.

Camping

Twin Lakes Campground, reserved through Recreation.gov, has tent and RV sites in three sections, two of them on the west shore. It has flush toilets and drinking water. Snow usually keeps it closed until late May or early June.

Mussel rule

Trailered boats need the free Eastern Sierra mussel inspection and sticker before launching.

Getting there & access

Getting there

From Mammoth Lakes take Highway 203 west onto Lake Mary Road, then Twin Lakes Road to the campground.

Season

Snow usually keeps the campground closed until late May or early June.

Mussel inspection

Since April 2026, Mono County requires every trailered boat and jet ski to be inspected before launching. Inspections, decontamination and the Eastern Sierra mussel sticker are free at Eastern Sierra WID stations (Bridgeport and Bishop among them). Residents inspect once a year; visitors inspect on entering Mono or Inyo County, and again after launching anywhere outside the two counties. Arrive clean, drained and dry.
