About this lake
Salmon Lake is a Lakes Basin lake off Gold Lake Highway in the Tahoe National Forest, home to Salmon Lake Lodge, which runs under a Forest Service permit.
On the water
The lodge rents 2- and 3-person rowboats, with oars and life jackets, for $40 a day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No reservations: use the phone on the tree to call the lodge, sign the boat agreement and pay cash. Children under 16 need an adult, and boats can't go out after dusk or in storms. Guests get free use of kayaks, rowboats, paddleboards and a canoe, and a guest barge runs on the hour from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Fishing and swimming
The state stocks hybrid rainbow trout; native brook, brown and rainbow trout are also here. Fishing is best in June, September and October. The water is warm enough to swim from late June to mid-September.
Lodge
The lodge has tent cabins and cabins, a shower house and trails to meadows, glacial lakes and the Pacific Crest Trail.
Getting there & access
Getting there
Take Gold Lake Highway to Salmon Lake Road in the Lakes Basin.
Golden mussels
The Forest Service asks every boater to clean, drain and dry boats, trailers and gear, never drain bilge or ballast into the lake, and check the lake's launching rules before visiting. California also requires a Mussel Fee Sticker on motorized boats used in fresh water.
