About this lake
Mammoth Pool is a five-mile reservoir on the San Joaquin River, off the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway in the Sierra National Forest.
On the water
Boating, waterskiing, personal watercraft and non-motorized boating are all allowed. The reservoir is closed to boating and fishing every year from May 1 to June 16 for the deer migration; fishing is also banned in tributaries within 300 feet of the high-water mark then. The boat launch was closed for rehabilitation from December 2025 and reopened on June 19, 2026. The Forest Service asks boaters to clean, drain and dry.
Camping
Mammoth Pool Campground, half a mile from the lake, is a primitive camp open June to October at $41 a night, reserved on Recreation.gov. It has vault toilets but no drinking water, and RVs are limited to 30 feet. Wagner's resort nearby sells food, gas and supplies; it's the only gas on Minarets Road.
Getting there & access
Getting there
From Fresno take Highway 41 north, Road 200 to North Fork, then Minarets Road (Forest Road 81) 37 miles and Mammoth Pool Road 4 miles.
Golden mussels
The Forest Service asks every boater to clean, drain and dry boats, trailers and gear, never drain bilge or ballast into the lake, and check the lake's launching rules before visiting. California also requires a Mussel Fee Sticker on motorized boats used in fresh water.
