Lake guide

Lopez Lake

Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County, CA

Overview

Lopez Lake is a county-run reservoir in the hills above Arroyo Grande, in San Luis Obispo County. SLO County Parks operates the Lopez Lake Recreation Area at 6800 Lopez Drive, and the lake covers nearly 1,000 acres. It is the main trailer-boat lake on the south county coast, and unlike its neighbor Santa Margarita Lake it is a recreation lake where boaters of every type are welcome.

Launching and the marina

The Lopez Lake Marina has a launch ramp, a food store, snack bar, tackle shop and year-round boat rentals. The state boating facilities directory lists the launch facility with 100 parking spaces for cars with trailers, 15 carry-down walkways and 65 dry storage spaces. Canoes and kayaks can also use the Mallard Cove hand-launch area.

Mussel inspection comes first

Every boat must be inspected before it can launch, and the rules tightened on January 1, 2026. Vessels must arrive clean, drained and dry. Boats with internal ballast tanks or ballast bags need a 30-day quarantine, bleach decontamination is no longer accepted, and any boat used on an infested water in the previous 30 days is refused. Clear tags from other lakes have not been honored here since November 1, 2024.

On the water

The lake is known for crappie, bass, catfish and sunfish, and the upper Lopez Arm is a quiet area for canoeing. Windy coves attract windsurfers. Lake levels change through the year, so check current conditions with the park before you tow.
