Lake guide
Lake Sonoma
Healdsburg, Sonoma County, CA
Overview
Lake Sonoma sits in the wine country of northern Sonoma County, about ten miles northwest of Healdsburg. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Warm Springs Dam in 1983 for flood control and water supply, and at full pool the lake covers more than 2,700 acres with about 50 miles of shoreline. Two long arms, Warm Springs and Dry Creek, give boaters quiet coves and a good bass fishery.
Launching and the marina
There is a public boat ramp near the dam with a courtesy dock and fishing docks, plus Lake Sonoma Marina, which has its own launch, slips, fuel, a store and rentals. Yorty Creek Recreation Area is car-top launching only, and trailers are prohibited at Yorty Creek and No Name Flat. The Corps day-use pass is $7 a day and covers one vehicle and one trailer.
Boat-in camping
Lake Sonoma is known for primitive boat-in and hike-to campsites on the Warm Springs and Dry Creek arms, reserved through Recreation.gov. Sites are scattered along the shoreline, such as Bummer Peak, Quicksilver, Lone Pine and Madrone Point.
Rules and inspections
The maximum speed limit is 50 mph, with designated ski areas and no-wake zones, and children under 13 must wear a life jacket. Sonoma County Water Agency runs an invasive mussel inspection program for all vessels, including paddlecraft; inspectors use visual checks or trained dogs, and you may leave with a seal that speeds future visits.
Getting there & access
Public boat ramp
The Corps' public ramp near the dam has a courtesy dock and fishing docks. Day-use access is a $7 pass bought through the Recreation.gov app or an envelope at the pay station, covering one vehicle and one boat trailer; Army Corps annual passes and America the Beautiful passes are accepted.
Lake Sonoma Marina
The marina at 4200 Skaggs Springs Road has a launch ramp, storage slips, fuel and a dock with staff help. FAQ hours are daily 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in winter; confirm before you drive up. Launch fees quoted by the marina are $30 for the ramp and $20 for hand launching, plus daily parking.
Car-top launching
Yorty Creek Recreation Area is for car-top boats only, and overnight parking there needs a permit from the visitor center. Trailers are prohibited at Yorty Creek and No Name Flat.
Inspection
The Sonoma County Water Agency inspects vessels for quagga and zebra mussels before launch, including paddleboards, kayaks and canoes. Plugs must be out, and the boat must be clean, drained and dry. Boaters stop again on leaving to receive a seal that speeds later visits. Hours have varied by season, so check with the visitor center.
