Lake guide
Lake McClure
Snelling, Mariposa County, CA
Overview
Lake McClure is Merced Irrigation District's big reservoir on the Merced River in Mariposa County, formed by New Exchequer Dam in 1967 and holding about 1,032,000 acre-feet. It's a long, branching lake with plenty of coves and inlets, popular for waterskiing, wakeboarding, fishing and houseboating. Smaller Lake McSwain sits just downstream and is a no-wake lake for paddling and quiet fishing.
Layout
The District runs four recreation areas with ramps on McClure: McClure Point near the dam (north and south ramps), Barrett Cove on the west side off Barrett Cove Road, Horseshoe Bend, and Bagby far up the Merced arm. McSwain has its own ramp and marina.
Ramp status changes with the water
Water level drives which ramps work. At last check McClure Point's north and south ramps and the Barrett Cove south ramp were open, Barrett Cove north and the Horseshoe Bend main ramp were closed (a low-water dirt extension to its right was usable), and Bagby was closed.
Houseboats and fees
The District publishes houseboat regulations and a houseboat information hub. Day-use boat fees are charged per boat and trailer, and annual passes are sold.
