About this lake

Lake George sits at about 9,000 feet at the top of the Mammoth Lakes Basin, a short drive above Lake Mary on Lake George Road.

On the water

The Forest Service runs a boat launch on the lake and lists it among the basin lakes open to motorized boating. A boat rental dock shares the small parking lot with the campground and trailheads. Trailered boats need the free Eastern Sierra mussel inspection and sticker before launching.

Camping

Lake George Campground has 15 sites at $34 a night. It takes no reservations; you register at the campground. Each site has a bear box, and food and scented items must stay in it.

Season

The basin road is open in summer only, and the single parking lot is small.

Getting there & access

Getting there

From Mammoth Lakes take Lake Mary Road into the basin, then turn up Lake George Road to the lake.

Parking

One small lot is shared by the campground, the rental dock and the trailheads.

Mussel inspection

Since April 2026, Mono County requires every trailered boat and jet ski to be inspected before launching. Inspections, decontamination and the Eastern Sierra mussel sticker are free at Eastern Sierra WID stations (list at EasternSierraWID.com). Residents inspect once a year; visitors inspect on entering Mono or Inyo County, and again after launching anywhere outside the two counties. Arrive clean, drained and dry.
