Lake guide

Lake Del Valle

Livermore, Alameda County, CA

Overview

Lake Del Valle is a narrow, five-mile reservoir in the oak-covered hills south of Livermore, run by the East Bay Regional Park District as part of Del Valle Regional Park. It is a State Water Project reservoir that stores water for the South Bay Aqueduct and helps with Alameda Creek flood control, so it is managed as a quiet-water fishing and cruising lake rather than a ski lake.

What makes boating here different

The speed limit is 10 mph on the entire lake and personal watercraft are prohibited. The park also bans hydrofoils and e-foils. Boats of any size can use the public ramp, from kayaks and sailboats to motorboats, and the marina rents motorboats and patio boats. The lake has about 16 miles of shoreline, and water levels swing with the seasons, which creates navigation hazards.

Mussel rules matter more than usual

Every boat, kayak, canoe, inflatable and floating board must be inspected before launching. In September 2026 the district reported golden mussels at Del Valle, and it now applies a 30-day quarantine to boats launching here. The district exempts boats that launch only at Del Valle and keep their inspection band or pass intact. If you also boat other waters, plan around that quarantine.

Who uses it

Anglers dominate, chasing stocked rainbow trout in the cooler months and catfish, bass and panfish. Families come for the beach, rentals and the campground. Boats must be back at the ramp one hour before the park closes.

Getting there & access

By road

The park entrance is at 7000 Del Valle Road in Livermore, about 10 minutes from downtown. The public boat launch and the East Beach marina area are inside the park, so you pay at the entrance and again for inspection and launch.

Inspection before launch

All watercraft are inspected at the park before launching. Staff look for water in outboards, bilges, live wells and compartments, which are the most common reasons boats fail; the district suggests waiting at least five days after flushing your motor. A current registration is required for all motorized craft. Re-entry bands let you come back to the same lake without a full inspection each time.

Quarantine for visiting boats

Since the golden mussel detection announced in September 2026, boats launching at Del Valle face a 30-day quarantine from other district waterbodies. Boats that exclusively launch at Del Valle and keep their band or park pass intact are exempt.

On the water

Keep to 10 mph everywhere. Seasonal drawdown changes shoreline hazards, so go slowly in unfamiliar coves. Rental boats and every other boat should be back at the ramp an hour before the park closes.
