About this lake

Lake Chabot is a 315-acre reservoir in Castro Valley, built in 1874-75 as an East Bay water supply and opened as a regional park in 1966. EBMUD still owns the reservoir as a standby emergency supply, and the East Bay Regional Park District runs the park and marina.

On the water

Private boats must be carried in: canoes, kayaks, inflatables with three or more chambers, float tubes and rowboats up to 17 feet. Motorboats, sailboats and stand-up paddleboards aren't allowed. Every craft needs an invasive mussel inspection before launch.

Rentals

The marina rents rowboats, pedal boats, kayaks, Duffy boats and boats with electric trolling motors, and runs lake tours and charters. The marina is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Lake Chabot Marina & Café sells snacks, bait and tackle.

Fishing and trails

The lake is stocked with trout and catfish and also holds bass and crappie. Paved West Shore and East Shore trails, each about 3.5 miles, follow the water. Swimming is never allowed.
