Lake guide

Huntington Lake

Lakeshore, Fresno County, CA

Overview

Huntington Lake is a high-country reservoir at about 6,955 feet in Sierra National Forest, roughly 60 miles up Highway 168 from Clovis. Southern California Edison built it as part of the Big Creek hydroelectric project starting in 1912. Three dams were finished in 1913 and a fourth in 1919. The lake is about 5 miles long and covers roughly 1,441 acres, with Highway 168 reaching the east end near China Peak ski area and the small community of Lakeshore.

Who boats here

Huntington is best known as a sailing lake. Steady afternoon winds of around 15 mph draw the High Sierra Regatta and national sailing championships. Fishing boats, ski boats and paddlers share it in summer.

Season and conditions

This is a short-season lake. Heavy snow closes most of it to recreation in winter, and campgrounds such as Catavee run roughly June through October. Expect cold water, thin air that cuts engine power, afternoon wind and limited cell service.

Launching and marinas

The Forest Service boat launch has paved roads and parking, an accessible ramp and restrooms; boaters register at the ramp kiosk. Huntington Lake Resort on the north shore and the marina at the east end both list fuel, boat rentals and slips or tie-ups. Before you go, follow Clean, Drain, Dry and check with the marina or the High Sierra Ranger District about current invasive-mussel requirements.

Getting there & access

By road

From Clovis, take Highway 168 north about 40 miles to Shaver Lake, then about 20 more miles up to Huntington Lake. Huntington Lake Road follows the north shore past the campgrounds and marinas. Expect mountain grades with a trailer.

Launching

The Forest Service boat launch has paved roads and parking, an accessible boat ramp and restrooms. Register at the boat ramp kiosk before launching. Billy Creek Picnic Area also has an accessible boat ramp.

Marinas

Huntington Lake Resort, 58910 Huntington Lake Road, lists about 30 slips or tie-ups, fuel and rentals for boats roughly 14 to 30 feet. The marina at 62311 Huntington Lake Road on the east end lists 122 slips or tie-ups, fuel, rentals and haul-out and repair for boats about 10 to 33 feet. Call ahead for current season and services.

Wind and weather

Wind usually builds through the afternoon. Mornings are calmer for fishing and paddling, while sailors wait for the afternoon breeze. Mountain thunderstorms can bring sudden gusts in summer.

Rules & official resources

Common boat service needs here

Spring commissioning and winterizing

Boats here sit through long, freezing winters. Proper winterizing in fall and a full engine and systems check before the short summer season are the most common service needs.

Sailboat rigging and covers

Strong afternoon winds and high-altitude UV wear out sails, canvas covers and Bimini tops faster than at lower elevations.

Transport up the mountain

Highway 168 is a long, steep tow. Many owners hire boat transport to bring boats up for the season and down for winter storage.

Seasonal storage

Snow closes the lake area for much of the year, so owners need covered or indoor storage between seasons.
