Lake guide
Donner Lake
Truckee, Nevada County, CA
Overview
Donner Lake is a deep alpine lake just west of downtown Truckee, about 2.7 miles long, 0.6 miles wide and 238 feet deep at its deepest point. The public boat launch sits at its west end at 15511 Donner Pass Road, near South Shore Drive. The Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District runs it on a lease from the California State Lands Commission.
Before you launch: the Donner Lake sticker
Under Town of Truckee ordinance, a self-inspection is mandatory for every motorized or trailered watercraft launching on Donner Lake. Before your first launch of the season, inspect the boat where it's kept and take the completed form to the Truckee Police Department lobby to get the sticker. For 2026 that's the Donner Lake 2026 sticker. Non-motorized craft are inspected only if the Town decides it's necessary.
The ramp
The ramp is a two-lane concrete launch with boarding floats, a small car-and-trailer lot, restrooms and a fish cleaning station. Launch and parking fees are paid to ramp staff, and the ramp is staffed seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Conditions
Water levels drop for much of the year. The District's planning report says low water usually lasts about seven months and leaves the ramp unusable for larger boats in most winter months. The District has an improvement project in planning to extend the ramp, replace the boarding floats and add a fee kiosk.
Getting there & access
By road
The ramp is at 15511 Donner Pass Road, at its intersection with South Shore Drive, at the west end of the lake. Trailer parking is limited, with about 10 car-and-trailer stalls plus single-vehicle stalls and street parking, so arrive early on summer weekends.
Getting your sticker
Print the Town's self-inspection form, inspect the boat where it's stored, then take the completed form to the Truckee Police Department lobby (10183 Truckee Airport Road, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m., no appointment). Put the Donner Lake 2026 sticker on the boat. For after-hours pickup or mailing, email the completed form to police-records@townoftruckee.gov.
Coming from Lake Tahoe
Under Truckee Police guidance, you don't need a separate Donner Lake sticker if you have a current, valid Lake Tahoe sticker and haven't been in any other water since. Going back to Tahoe afterward means getting reinspected at a Tahoe inspection station.
Low water
Low water usually lasts about seven months of the year, and larger boats often can't use the ramp in winter. Check current lake levels before trailering up.

Common boat service needs here
Winterization
Hard Sierra freezes make proper winterization of engines, cooling systems and plumbing essential. Without it, a cracked block or manifold is a common, expensive surprise.
Find Marine Mechanics & Engine Service providers →Clean, drain and dry
Because of the self-inspection sticker program and Tahoe's stricter inspections, owners moving between Donner, Tahoe and other lakes keep hulls, bilges and ballast tanks clean and dry.
Find Boat Detailing & Washing providers →Covers and storage
Snow load and high-altitude UV punish covers and canvas, and many owners store boats off-season. Good covers and winter storage are in high demand around Truckee.
Find Canvas, Covers & Upholstery providers →Transport
Low water often makes the ramp unusable for bigger boats in winter, and many boats are trailered up from the valley. Boat transport is a common need.
