About this lake
Status: Crater Lake is closed for winter. It opens each year from June to October and stays open until snow makes the road impassable.
Crater Lake sits at 6,800 feet in the Lassen National Forest, 7 miles off Highway 44 in the Eagle Lake Ranger District.
On the water
No gas motors are allowed. Fly fishing, canoeing and float tubing are the favorites, and the state boating directory lists a small launch with parking for four trailers. The Forest Service asks boaters to clean, drain and dry.
Camping
The campground has 17 sites at the lake, each with a fire ring and table, for $10 a night, with hand-pumped water and vault toilets. The road is rough and steep, so motor homes and large trailers aren't recommended. In fall the aspen stands put on a display of color.

Golden mussels
The Forest Service asks every boater to clean, drain and dry boats, trailers and gear, never drain bilge or ballast into the lake, and check the lake's launching rules before visiting. California also requires a Mussel Fee Sticker on motorized boats used in fresh water.
