About this lake

Status: Copco and Iron Gate reservoirs no longer exist. Their dams were removed in the Klamath River dam removal project, and the Klamath now flows free through the former reservoir areas. There is no lake boating here.

River access

Since August 1, 2025, five day-use river access sites have been open along the restored reach. The three in California are run by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife: K'utárawáx·u (Grizzly Hill), K'účasčas (Fall Creek) and Iron Gate, each open sunrise to sunset. Each site has a river access point, a vault toilet, picnic tables, limited parking and bike racks. All the land around the sites is closed; stay inside the designated sites.

River safety

The river is still reshaping its channel, with rapids, rocks and downed trees. There are Class IV+ rapids below the Grizzly Hill site, so less experienced boaters should take out there. Always wear a life jacket. Sites can close in bad weather.

Coming

An interpretive Heritage Trail linked to the Fall Creek and Grizzly Hill sites, on the ancestral lands of the Shasta Indian Nation, is expected to open in summer 2026.
