About this lake
Status: closed. Anderson Reservoir has been drained and closed to boating, fishing and all water recreation since October 2020, when federal regulators ordered it lowered because the 1950s dam might fail in a major earthquake on the nearby Calaveras fault.
The rebuild
Valley Water first built a larger outlet tunnel. In July 2026 it awarded a $1.88 billion contract to rebuild the 240-foot dam, with main construction starting in January 2027 and running through 2033. After that, the reservoir needs time to refill, so boating won't return for years.
Boating nearby
Anderson is Valley Water's largest reservoir. Until it reopens, Coyote Lake and Calero Reservoir are the closest county lakes open to power boats.
