Harbor guide

Monterey Harbor

Monterey, Monterey County, CA

Overview

Monterey Harbor is the City of Monterey's municipal marina, at 250 Figueroa Street beside Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. The marina has 413 slips from 20 to 50 feet, plus six end ties for vessels of 40 to 60 feet. A waiting list applies to long-term slips. The harbor sits inside the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, so fishing, diving, sailing and whale-watching trips all start in sanctuary waters.

Guest slips

Transient berths are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Assignments are made when you are within VHF range or at the launch ramp, and you are asked to call about an hour before arrival to confirm availability. The marina's VHF working channel is 5 (the city lists 05a), with channel 16 for emergencies. Check-in is after 8 a.m. and check-out is before 5 p.m. Day-use slips are available on a space-available basis. Water, power and Wi-Fi are included in slip fees, and the harbor has laundry, restrooms and showers.

Launch ramps and trailer parking

Two public launch ramps next to the Harbormaster's office have no launch charge. Pull-through trailer parking is available from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily. The harbor and marina are open 24 hours a day, and the office is staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. After hours, call Harbor Patrol at (831) 594-7760.

Fuel

Breakwater Cove Marina operates the fuel dock, open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Moorings and anchoring

The east moorings rent monthly, while outer harbor moorings are privately owned. There is an open anchorage east of Wharf #2, outside the mooring field.

Sanctuary rules for boaters

Federal sanctuary regulations restrict the discharge or deposit of materials in sanctuary waters, with specific exceptions. Disturbing marine mammals, sea turtles or seabirds is prohibited. Personal watercraft may operate only in designated zones, launching from identified harbors and going straight to the zone by the specified route. Heavy weather can send surge into the harbor despite the breakwater, so secure lines well.
