Ventura (Boating Guide)

Ventura, Ventura County, CA

Overview

Ventura is the mainland gateway to Channel Islands National Park, and its boating life centers on Ventura Harbor. The harbor has a commercial fishing fleet, sportfishing boats, dive charters, boat rentals and marinas, all within walking distance of Ventura Harbor Village.

Harbor Village

Ventura Harbor Village is the waterfront hub. The Port District's fact sheet counts 35 shops, more than 16 restaurants and cafes, two waterfront hotels, a carousel and arcade, and Harbor Cove and Surfers Knoll beaches. A 3-mile promenade links Harbor Cove Beach, the marinas, the village and Marina Park, passing the Fisherman's Memorial Arch. Boaters can tie up free for up to 2 hours at the Harbor Village Marina C dock.

The islands

Island Packers is the National Park Service concessionaire for boat transport to the park's five islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara. Its Ventura office is at 1691 Spinnaker Dr, (805) 642-1393, and boats leave from Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Harbor. It also runs wildlife cruises with no island landing. The Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center at 1901 Spinnaker Dr is open 8:30 AM to 5 PM daily and shows a film about the park.

Fishing and events

Ventura Sportfishing, at 1500 Anchors Way Dr, runs open-party and private charters and overnight trips for halibut, white seabass, yellowtail, rockfish and more. The village hosts annual events such as the Ventura Art and Chalk Festival, held in September at Harbor Village Marina, the Parade of Lights boat parade and Pirate Days.

Bottom cleaning for island boats
