Newport Beach

Newport Beach, Orange County, CA

Overview

Newport Beach is Orange County's boating capital. Newport Harbor is one of the largest recreational harbors in the country, with about 9,000 boats by one cited count, and the city runs it through a dedicated Harbor Department. The harbor stretches more than 3 miles from the entrance jetties back toward the Back Bay, with about 20 feet of water in the main channel and shallower depths elsewhere, such as near Lido Isle.

The harbor and who runs it

The City of Newport Beach Harbor Department handles mooring assignments, guest slips and anchorage services. Guest slips are at the city's Marina Park (1600 W. Balboa Blvd., VHF 17), and the Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol is headquartered at 1901 Bayside Drive in Corona del Mar. The whole harbor is a 5 mph no-wake zone and a no-discharge harbor, with 10 public pump-out stations. The city began what it calls the largest and final major dredging project in November 2025, about 900,000 cubic yards expected to take 10 to 12 months, to restore federally authorized depths.

Boating businesses and culture

California State Parks lists 34 facilities in the harbor, including marinas, yacht clubs, boatyards such as Newport Harbor Shipyard, fuel docks, dry storage and aquatic programs at Orange Coast College, UC Irvine and the Boy Scouts Sea Base. Balboa Pavilion, built in 1906, is the base for the Catalina Flyer, whale watching and sportfishing.

Events and getting around

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, now in its 118th year, draws lighted boats on the harbor each December; the 2026 parade runs December 16-20. The Newport to Ensenada race, held each spring, has been run since 1948. Getting around by water is part of daily life: the Balboa Island Ferry has crossed between Balboa Island and the peninsula since 1919, and boaters tie up at marinas and restaurant docks around the harbor.

Getting there & access

Entering from sea

The harbor entrance is between two lighted jetties, and the 5 mph no-wake zone begins as you enter. Check current conditions and the dredging project's notices before planning a visit in fall 2026, as work was expected to continue into the fall.

Guest slips, moorings and anchorage

Visiting vessels can use guest slips at Marina Park, mooring rentals or designated anchorages. Reserve through the city's online system or by calling the Harbor Department at (949) 270-8159; the office suggests checking in at 8 a.m. for mooring reservations.

Trailer boats

State Parks lists the Newport Dunes launch ramp and Balboa Yacht Club among launch and dry storage facilities. Confirm current fees and hours with the operator.

Fuel and pump-outs

Island Marine Fuel (406 S. Bay Front, Balboa Island), Hill's Boat Service (814 E. Bay Ave., Balboa) and Newport Landing are listed fuel or service docks. Ten public pump-out stations serve the harbor, with paid mobile pump-out also available.

Rules & official resources

Common boat service needs here

Bottom and hull cleaning

Boats in slips and on moorings sit in warm harbor water, so marine growth is a constant concern and regular diver service is standard.

Bottom paint and haul-outs

With a working shipyard and dredged channels, many owners haul out periodically for antifouling and running-gear service.

Detailing and gelcoat

Sun and salt air oxidize gelcoat, and a boat-parade or charter fleet means frequent wash, wax and polishing.

Engine service

Boats that cross to Catalina or race to Ensenada need reliable engines, generators and cooling systems.
