Discovery Bay

Discovery Bay, Contra Costa County, CA

Overview

Discovery Bay is an unincorporated waterfront community in eastern Contra Costa County, next to Highway 4. It was built in the 1960s on the Byron Tract, a former barley and potato farm, as a network of man-made waterways and residential islands. The 2020 census counted about 15,000 residents. Most homes have a private dock with boat access to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, so boating is part of daily life here.

On the water

The community is run by the Town of Discovery Bay Community Services District, which says its boaters can reach more than 1,200 miles of Delta waterways and travel all the way to San Francisco Bay. Residents fish, water ski and wakeboard, and cruise to Delta destinations such as Bethel Island, Franks Tract and Antioch.

Marina and services

The public marina is Discovery Bay Marina (formerly Discovery Bay Yacht Harbor) at 5901 Marina Road. It offers wet slips, secure dry boat storage with a forklift service, guest slip booking and a launch ramp, plus the Marina Bar & Grill. The marina lists daily office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the launch ramp open until 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday. Lazy M Marina is also listed nearby.

Before you go

Residential canals have slow speed limits and many docks, so watch your wake. Golden mussels were found in the Delta in 2024, so clean, drain and dry your boat after each trip.
