About this beach
Van Damme State Park is about three miles south of Mendocino on Highway 1 in Little River. Its beach is a protected cove that's popular for diving and kayaking; the dive site has shallow areas good for beginners, and divers should stay in designated areas.
Kayaking
Kayaks can launch from the cove. Kayak Mendocino offers rentals and tours, including summer tours to nearby tide pools and sea caves that leave from the beach parking lot.
Camping
The campground has more than 65 drive-in sites; reserve ahead from spring through fall. A narrow temporary bridge affects trailers heading to sites east of Little River. Backcountry camping is closed for maintenance.
Rules
Vehicle day use is $10. Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach and in the campground, but not on the Fern Canyon, Old Logging Road or Pygmy Forest trails. Don't gather dead or downed wood; buy firewood at the campground.
