About this beach

Sunset State Beach is about 16 miles south of Santa Cruz, between Santa Cruz and Monterey, with oceanside picnic spots and tall sand dunes. From Highway 1, take San Andreas Road south to Sunset Beach Road and turn west.

Safety

Rip currents, cold water and deep drop-offs make swimming and surfing hazardous for all but experienced surfers. Western snowy plovers nest on the sand; disturbing a posted nesting area is a federal violation.

Camping

There are tent, group, hike-and-bike and RV sites, for trailers up to 31 feet. Vehicle day use is $10.

Rules

Dogs aren't allowed on the beach (they're OK in the campground on a 6-foot leash; nearby Manresa State Beach allows leashed dogs). Fires only in park fire rings. No alcohol on the beach or in day use. No drones, though non-motorized gliders can use the glider port across from the South campground.
