Refugio State Beach

Goleta, Santa Barbara County, CA

Overview

Refugio State Beach is a small, palm-lined cove on the Gaviota Coast, about 20 miles west of Santa Barbara off Highway 101. Its narrow, crescent-shaped beach sits at the mouth of Refugio Creek. Fan and date palms planted between the 1920s and 1950s give it a look unlike any other beach on this coast. California State Parks runs it, and it's one of three state parks along the Gaviota Coast.

Who comes here

Campers book the 66 family sites and 3 group sites right behind the beach. Day visitors come to swim, fish, surf and kayak. Smooth, shallow water makes the cove a favorite spot for scuba certification dives. A blufftop bike trail and walkway runs east about 2.5 miles to El Capitan State Beach, with views of the Channel Islands.

Safety notes

State Parks warns that the beach you see at low tide can disappear as the tide comes in, trapping you against the cliffs. Check a tide chart or ask a lifeguard before walking the shoreline. The camp map also warns that jellyfish may be present.

Before you go

Dogs must stay on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and they're not allowed on the beach or in buildings, except service dogs. Fires are allowed only in established fire rings or camp stoves, never on the beach. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The day-use area has accessible picnic sites, restrooms and the Refugio Beach Store.

Bike trail to El Capitan
