Pismo Beach and Pismo Pier

Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo County, CA

Overview

Pismo Beach is the classic Central Coast pier-town beach: a long stretch of sand at the foot of Pomeroy Avenue with the Pismo Pier running more than 1,200 feet out into the surf. The pier started life as the Pismo Wharf in 1881, was largely destroyed by a storm in 1905, and was rebuilt in 1924 and again after an El Niño storm in the 1980s.

Who comes here

Families come for the sand and the plaza, surfers work both sides of the pier, and anglers line the rails for perch and flatfish. Pier Plaza at the foot of the pier has restrooms, sand showers, a whale-themed playground and a couple of vintage Airstream trailers serving food and visitor information. An oceanfront promenade, stroller- and wheelchair-friendly along its length, links the pier, downtown and Pismo State Beach to the south.

Surf and water conditions

The two sides of the pier break differently: the north side suits experienced surfers and the south side is friendlier for beginners, with mornings usually cleaner before the wind comes up. Seasonal lifeguards run by the Pismo Beach Fire Department with CAL FIRE staff five towers from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, so outside summer plan on swimming without tower coverage.

Clams and the state beach

Pismo clams live in the sand here, and harvest is tightly regulated by CDFW. Sub-legal clams far outnumber legal ones, so most diggers measure and rebury what they find.

Getting there & access

Driving and parking

Head for Pomeroy Avenue in downtown Pismo Beach. The main paid lot sits at the base of the pier between Pomeroy and Hinds Avenues, with more paid lots at Main and Dolliver and on Pomeroy between Price and Dolliver. Free street parking can be found on Pomeroy, Hinds, Stimson and Price, but it fills early on summer weekends. Check the posted rates and enforcement hours at the pay station.

Walking access

The oceanfront promenade connects the pier, Pier Plaza and downtown on foot and runs south toward Pismo State Beach. It is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs along its full length, and the plaza has a slide that drops kids onto the sand.

Surfing and paddling

Surfers enter on either side of the pier: the north side for experienced riders, the south side for beginners. Several surf shops near the pier rent boards and wetsuits. Stay clear of the pilings and of anglers' lines.

Fishing the pier

Sheldon's Bait Shack on the pier's second diamond rents rods and sells bait and tackle. Perch are common on the first half of the pier in heavier surf, with flatfish and occasional halibut toward the end.
