Beach guide
Ocean Beach (San Francisco)
San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA
Overview
Ocean Beach is San Francisco's 3.5-mile white-sand beach along the city's western edge, next to Golden Gate Park. The National Park Service manages it as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It's a place for long walks, dog walks, evening fires and experienced surfers, not for swimming.
A dangerous beach for swimming
NPS says the water is frigid and the currents hazardous for all but the most experienced surfers, and that swimming is strongly discouraged. Rip currents have swept people out in 3 feet of water, and sneaker waves can knock people down and pull them in. San Francisco's open shorelines don't have traditional lifeguards. If someone is swept out, call 911 and don't swim in after them.
Fires and dogs
Fires are allowed March 1 through October 31, only in the provided fire rings between Stairwells 15 and 20. From Stairwell 21 south to Sloat Boulevard is a Snowy Plover Protection Area, where dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet from July 1 to May 15.
Changes along the beach
The Upper Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard closed permanently to cars on March 14, 2025, and became a 2-mile, 43-acre oceanfront park. Plan to park in the city lots near the beach and walk in.
Getting there & access
Parking
The parking lots at Ocean Beach are owned by the City of San Francisco. Since March 2025 the Upper Great Highway from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard is closed to cars and is now park space, so allow time to walk from the lots.
Promenade and beach access
GGNRA built accessible routes from the parking areas to the promenade. In stormy weather parts of the promenade can be covered in sand. Beach wheelchairs are available on request.
Restrooms
Generally accessible restrooms are at the corner of Sloat Boulevard and the Great Highway.
Emergencies
Call 911 for anyone in trouble in the water, even if you're not sure. For a lost or drifting watercraft, contact the U.S. Coast Guard at (415) 399-3530.
