Natural Bridges State Beach
Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, CA
Overview
Natural Bridges State Beach sits at the far west end of West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, where a small sandy cove is framed by a wave-carved sea arch, the natural bridge the park is named for. It's a California State Parks day-use park that draws families, tide-poolers, birders and photographers more than swimmers.
What's here
Behind the beach, a eucalyptus and pine grove holds the picnic area and the Monarch Grove Natural Preserve, where more than 100,000 monarch butterflies can winter. Monarchs typically arrive in mid-October and leave by mid-February, and late October through November is often the best viewing. A short, accessible boardwalk, the Monarch Trail, leads to a viewing platform. The visitor center has exhibits and a bookstore.
Tide pools
The rocky shelf next to the beach is part of a Marine Protected Area, so the rule is no touch and no take. Tide pools are best at a low tide of 2 feet or lower, and docents lead tide-pool walks at low tide.
Conditions
There are no lifeguards. State Parks warns that hazardous rip currents and large waves can appear without warning and sweep people out to sea, so keep children close and never turn your back on the ocean.
Getting there & access
Driving and parking
From Highway 1, take Swift Street toward the ocean, or follow West Cliff Drive west along the bluffs until it ends at the park (2531 W. Cliff Drive). The main lot charges a $10 vehicle day-use fee; credit cards are encouraged and annual State Parks passes are sold at the entrance kiosk.
Walking in
West Cliff Drive's bluff-top path runs from downtown Santa Cruz to the park, so many visitors walk or bike in. The visitor center has a single accessible stall; the main lot serves the picnic areas and beach.
Beach wheelchairs
Free beach wheelchairs are available. Reservations are recommended through the Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks at (831) 429-1840.
