Mission Beach

San Diego, San Diego County, CA

Overview

Mission Beach is the middle of San Diego's Golden Strand, the stretch of sand that runs from Pacific Beach Point south to the Mission Bay channel. Mission Beach itself is just over a mile long, between Pacific Beach to the north and South Mission Beach to the south. It's one of the city's most popular beaches, with big summer crowds on the oceanfront and at Belmont Park next door.

The boardwalk

A concrete boardwalk runs the full length of the Golden Strand and ends in the South Mission Beach parking lot. The speed limit is 8 mph, and motorized scooters, e-bikes and similar devices are banned.

South Mission Beach

At the south end, South Mission Beach may be the widest beach in the city. It has beach volleyball, basketball and the only oceanfront area set aside for Over-The-Line, plus fire pits, picnic areas, restrooms and showers.

Water and lifeguards

Mission Beach has one of the City's nine permanent lifeguard stations, and lifeguards are generally on duty from 9 a.m. to dusk. The water off the main beaches is split into swimming and surfing zones, with black-and-yellow checkered flags between them.

Know before you go

Alcohol, glass and smoking are banned on the beach, the boardwalk and the nearby lots. Dogs aren't allowed during daytime hours.

Getting there & access

Boardwalk

The cement boardwalk runs the length of the Golden Strand from Pacific Beach to South Mission Beach, where it ends in the eastern part of the South Mission Beach parking lot. The City lists parking and public transportation among the beach's amenities.

Beach mats and wheelchairs

From May through September there's an access mat in front of the main lifeguard tower. Lifeguards lend a manual beach wheelchair when they're on duty, and someone has to push it.

Powered beach mobility gear

Freedom Trax, Access Trax mats and rollators are available at 3071 Ocean Front Walk, in the container next to the restrooms. The program is closed January–February. It runs Friday–Sunday 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. in March–April and October–December, Thursday–Sunday 11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. in May–June, and Thursday–Sunday 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. in July–September. Reserve at (619) 980-1876 during operating hours.

Small boats and PWCs on Mission Bay

Mission Bay is right behind the beach. Small boats and personal watercraft used there benefit from regular freshwater washdowns and detailing to keep salt off the hull and hardware.
