Half Moon Bay State Beach

Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County, CA

Overview

Half Moon Bay State Beach is a string of sandy beaches along Half Moon Bay's coastline, managed by California State Parks. From south to north the main access points are Francis Beach at the end of Kelly Avenue, Venice Beach, Dunes Beach and Roosevelt Beach. The Coastal Trail runs the whole length behind the sand, making it easy to walk or bike between them.

Who goes here

It's a beach for walking, picnicking, kite flying, camping and watching the surf. Francis Beach has the park's campground with 52 sites for tents, trailers and RVs, plus a visitor center open on weekends. Venice Beach has outdoor showers and flush toilets.

Water conditions

State Parks doesn't recommend swimming here because the water is extremely cold and rip currents are unpredictable. There are no lifeguard stations.

Rules that surprise visitors

Dogs aren't allowed on the beaches at any time, though leashed dogs can use the Coastal Trail, campground and picnic areas. Horses aren't allowed on the beaches either. Beach fires, fireworks and glass are prohibited, and you can't take shells or driftwood.
