Beach guide
Granite Bay Main Beach (Folsom Lake)
Granite Bay, Placer County, CA
Overview
Granite Bay is the largest day-use area on Folsom Lake, at the end of Douglas Boulevard in Placer County. California State Parks runs it as part of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. It combines the Main Beach swim and picnic area with one of the lake's main boat launch complexes, so swimmers, picnickers and trailer boaters all share the area on summer weekends.
Layout
A large lot serves the Main Beach, with accessible spaces, two unisex restroom buildings, a snack bar and equipment rentals. Picnic sites line the shore when the lake is full. Group picnic site A is at the south end of the Main Beach lot. The launch complex has four ramps, boarding floats and parking for about 920 vehicles with trailers. The Stage 4 ramp has its own restrooms and a shaded picnic area when the lake is full.
Water level
Folsom is a reservoir, and many shoreline facilities are only usable at full pool. Check current lake levels before you go.
Rules to know
Dogs aren't allowed in the Granite Bay swim area, and alcohol is banned in all day-use areas and on the lake surface except on registered vessels. Swimming isn't allowed within 500 feet of the launch ramps, and skim boarding isn't allowed on designated swim beaches. Trailered and motorized boats must carry a golden mussel quarantine or decontamination seal before launching.
Getting there & access
Driving and parking
Follow Douglas Boulevard to the Granite Bay entrance. A large lot serves the Main Beach, with 12 accessible spaces, and the Stage 4 ramp lot has 18. Gates lock at closing time, and inbound gates may close 30 minutes earlier.
Swimming near the ramps
Swimming isn't allowed within 500 feet of any launch ramp, so swim at the Main Beach rather than near the boat ramps.
Launching boats
Granite Bay has four ramps with boarding floats; the Stage 4 ramp has accessible boarding docks and is used when the lake is full. Under State Parks' golden mussel program, in place since 2025 and still enforced in August 2026, trailered and motorized boats need an intact 30-day quarantine seal or decontamination seal before launching. Check current inspection locations and hours before you tow.
Kayaks and paddleboards
Hand-launched kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are exempt from the inspection, quarantine and decontamination requirements. Arrive clean, drained and dry and stay clear of swim areas and ramps.

Common boat service needs here
Cleaning for inspection
Boats must arrive clean, drained and dry for Folsom's mussel inspections, so trailer boaters often book a hull, bilge and trailer wash before launch day.
Find Boat Detailing & Washing providers →Engine and trailer service
Hot Sacramento summers and frequent trailering at a reservoir put strain on engines, trailer bearings and brakes, so pre-season service is common.
Find Marine Mechanics & Engine Service providers →UV and oxidation care
Boats stored outside in the Sacramento Valley sun develop chalky, oxidized gelcoat. Compounding and waxing restore the finish.
