About this beach

Gaviota State Park is a beach and campground on the Gaviota Coast west of Santa Barbara, where Gaviota Creek meets the ocean.

The pier and hoist

For years the Gaviota Pier's hoist was the only boat launch between Santa Barbara Harbor and Port San Luis, and local boaters used it to reach the reefs and surf breaks off Hollister Ranch. A storm in early 2014 destroyed the last 100 feet of the pier, and the hoist was lost with it. As of late 2024 the pier was still closed, with repairs folded into a State Parks general plan update and no reopening date.

The beach

Today Gaviota is a beach and camping stop rather than a boating one. The campground, restrooms and showers sit right behind the beach, and small boats need to launch at Santa Barbara or Port San Luis instead.
