Beach guide
Fiesta Island
San Diego, San Diego County, CA
Overview
Fiesta Island is a peninsula in the east part of Mission Bay Park, owned by the City of San Diego and known as the most rustic corner of the bay. A single road loops around it, shorelines are mostly sand, and it has no restrooms, so boaters should plan to bring what they need. It sits beside Fiesta Bay, the open-speed area of the bay, so it draws PWC riders and small boats as well as paddlers.
Access road and hours
From I-5, take Sea World Drive, then East Mission Bay Drive to the island entrance. The city lists Fiesta Island as open 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with parking throughout the island. One local guide describes the loop road as one-way with a 25 mph limit, so drive slowly around beachgoers and dogs.
On the water
The city lists a 5 mph zone on the east side of the island, which is calmer for kayaks and paddleboards. Water skiing needs a permit from San Diego Lifeguards, 2581 Quivira Court. The north end of the island is closed to beaching and launching. Across the island the shoreline is within the 100-foot 5 mph zone.
What to expect
Fires are only allowed in city fire rings. Alcohol is prohibited and glass containers are not allowed. A fenced off-leash dog area makes parts of the island busy with dogs.
Getting there & access
By road
Take the Sea World Drive exit from I-5, continue to East Mission Bay Drive and turn onto Fiesta Island. A single road loops the island, described locally as one-way counterclockwise. Parking is free along the road and in sand lots. The island closes to vehicles overnight.
Hand-launching
Kayaks and paddleboards can be carried to the beach on the island's east side, where the City posts a 5 mph water zone. Expect sand and bring your own water and restroom plan.
PWC and small powerboats
Fiesta Island is next to Fiesta Bay, the only area of Mission Bay with no daytime speed limit. Personal watercraft have designated areas in the bay, and some require permits from Lifeguard Services.
Closed areas
The north end of Fiesta Island is closed to beaching, launching and anchoring. Keep out of ski landing zones, which are reserved for skiers.
