Crissy Field East Beach

San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA

Overview

Crissy Field East Beach is the sandy bayfront at the east end of Crissy Field, part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Presidio of San Francisco. It looks straight out at the Golden Gate Bridge across a calm stretch of San Francisco Bay, which makes it one of the city's most popular spots for families, picnickers, dog walkers and people-watchers.

Layout

A free parking lot sits right next to the beach, with a concrete restroom building, a dog washing station and an accessible picnic area just west of the restrooms. The flat Crissy Field Promenade (part of the Bay Trail) runs about 2.3 miles west from here past the restored tidal marsh and the Warming Hut toward the bridge. Crissy Field is a roughly 100-acre shoreline park on a former Army airfield, restored by volunteers and the Park Service between 1998 and 2000.

On the water

The National Park Service describes East Beach as a safe space to play in the bay waters, and Crissy Field is known for boardsailing: the best conditions run from March to October, when the wind blows strongly onshore. Kitesurfers are a common sight on windy afternoons.

Before you go

Wind often picks up in the afternoon, and temperatures average 50-60F year-round, so bring layers. Grills and picnic tables are first-come, first-served. San Francisco tests the water at Crissy Field East and posts No Swimming signs when bacteria levels are high.

Common boat service needs here

Paddle and windsport gear care

Boardsailors, kiters and paddlers using the bay here deal with salt spray and strong afternoon wind. Regular freshwater rinsing and cleaning of boards, hulls and hardware keeps gear from corroding.
