Beach guide
Commons Beach (Tahoe City)
Tahoe City, Placer County, CA
Overview
Commons Beach is the free public lakefront park in the center of Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe's north shore, at 400 North Lake Boulevard. Placer County owns the beach, and the Tahoe City Public Utility District (TCPUD) runs it. The four-plus-acre park has about 900 feet of lake frontage, a sandy beach, a grassy lawn, a playground and picnic areas.
Who goes here
It's Tahoe City's town beach: families swimming and sunbathing, people picnicking on the lawn and paddlers heading out by kayak, canoe or paddleboard. In summer it's the setting for free Sunday afternoon Concerts at Commons Beach, and a Thursday morning farmers market runs alongside it.
History
A century ago the site handled lake shipping and rail lines. A $6.2 million restoration finished in 2003 expanded the sandy beach and rebuilt the playground, picnic facilities and lawn, and the County paid in 2014 to replace sand the wind had carried away.
Things to know
Dogs aren't allowed on the beach or in the water; leashed dogs can use the paved multi-use trail. The Placer County Sheriff enforces no glass, no smoking, no fires or BBQs on the beach, and no littering. Group BBQ use depends on North Tahoe Fire restrictions. Clean, drain and dry paddlecraft before and after launching.
Getting there & access
Parking
Park at the lake-level lot, near Mackinaw Road or on the street. On summer Thursdays the lot is closed until 2 p.m. for the farmers market, so plan on street parking or transit.
Transit, walking and biking
TART buses from Truckee, Incline Village and the West Shore all meet in Tahoe City, and bike and pedestrian trails along SR 89 and SR 28 lead to the park. The lakeside paved path connects toward Dollar Point.
Kayaks and paddleboards
You can reach the lake by kayak, canoe or paddleboard from Commons Beach, and seasonal kayak and paddleboard storage and rentals are on site. Watercraft must be clean, drained and dry before and after launching.
Group facilities
The group BBQ area (up to 75 people) and the small amphitheater (about 65 seats) require reservations through TCPUD and aren't available during the Sunday concert series.

Common boat service needs here
Paddlecraft storage
Many Tahoe City visitors and part-time residents keep kayaks and paddleboards in seasonal storage near the beach instead of hauling them every trip.
Find Marinas, Storage & Dock Services providers →Covers and UV care
High-altitude sun on the north shore fades and cracks covers on paddlecraft and small boats stored outside, so owners often replace or repair them.
