About this beach
Big River Beach is on the south side of the village of Mendocino, part of Mendocino Headlands State Park. You can drive in from Highway 1 or walk down trails from the bluffs.
On the water
The beach sits where Big River meets the ocean. State Parks lists it as the place to explore the Big River Estuary by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard, as well as by bike and on horseback. The beach is used for picnics, sunbathing and playing in the surf. Since 2002 the Big River wetlands have been part of the park, a 7,400-acre wildlife corridor.
Visiting
The park is day use only, with no camping. Dogs are allowed, and drones are not. The Ford House Visitor Center on Main Street has exhibits on Mendocino's logging history.
