Beach guide
Baker Beach
San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA
Overview
Baker Beach is a mile-long sandy beach at the foot of serpentine cliffs on the Presidio's western shore, just west of the Golden Gate. It's managed by the National Park Service, with panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands and Lands End.
What people do here
Visitors come to picnic, walk, fish from the beach and rocky shoreline, watch sunsets and hike the Coastal Trail on the cliffs above. A picnic area with tables, grills and restrooms is tucked into the cypress grove at the east end of the parking area. The northernmost end of the beach is used by clothing-optional sunbathers.
History
Battery Chamberlin, a historic coastal battery reached by a service road next to the North lot, hosts regular disappearing-gun demonstrations, and historic photographs are displayed inside its magazine on the first weekend of each month.
Not a swimming beach
NPS says large waves, undertow and rip currents make Baker Beach unsafe for swimming. San Francisco's open shorelines don't have traditional lifeguards, and the water is cold. Parking gets congested on sunny weekends.
Getting there & access
Parking lots
There are two lots. The North lot has 6 accessible spaces with van access and an accessible restroom in the adjacent building. The South lot has 3 accessible spaces and an accessible portable toilet. Expect congestion on sunny weekends.
Getting to the sand
The permanent accessible ramp to the beach was damaged in a heavy storm and the park is seeking funding to repair it. Beach wheelchairs are available at both lots on request and can be reserved in advance.
Coastal Trail
Hikers can pick up the California Coastal Trail on the cliffside above the beach, toward the Golden Gate Bridge and Lands End.
