Beach guide

Baby Beach (Dana Point Harbor)

Dana Point, Orange County, CA

Overview

Baby Beach is a small, sheltered beach on the west side of Dana Point Harbor, next to the Ocean Institute and Dana Cove. A County health study describes it as a small, child-friendly beach protected by a western breakwater. Because there are no waves, it is popular with families with toddlers and with paddlers.

Paddling and launching

The harbor's protected water makes this a favored spot for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. One local guide describes a launch area marked with cones at the beach's far left side. The harbor beyond is a 5 mph zone shared with powerboats and sailboats, so stay alert in the channel and keep clear of the anchorage next to the Ocean Institute.

Water quality postings

Baby Beach has a long history of bacteria postings. The OC Health Care Agency says it has been routinely posted since AB 411 took effect in 1999, and its studies tie this to limited circulation, storm drains, bird droppings and bacteria in sediment. The State Water Board lists a bacteria cleanup plan effective 2009 and says conditions are improving, with dry-weather targets met. Always check OC Beach Info for current closures, warnings and advisories before swimming, particularly after rain.

Facilities

Free parking is available in nearby lots, and a lifeguard is on duty in the summer season, per local guides. Restrooms, picnic areas and grass are close by, and The Ocean Institute is next door. Parking can fill on summer weekends.

Getting there & access

By road

Take Dana Point Harbor Drive to the west side of the harbor near the Ocean Institute. A local guide advises not to trust GPS for the parking lots, so follow signs toward Dana Cove Park.

Launching paddle craft

Kayaks and paddleboards launch from a marked area on the far left side of the beach. Carry craft over the sand; this is not a powerboat ramp. Powerboat trailers should use the Embarcadero ramp.

On the water

The harbor has a 5 mph speed limit. The west anchorage lies next to the Ocean Institute and Baby Beach, and it is monitored by OC Sheriff Harbor Patrol. Stay clear of anchored boats and the main channel.

OC Health Care Agency posts beach closures, warnings and advisories at ocbeachinfo.com, and signs are posted on the sand. Check before you go, especially within a few days after rain.
